It’s All About Alpacas! On Saturday, August 20, 2011, the partners of Fevolden Farm LLC are providing an opportunity to learn all about alpacas. These marvelous animals have been in this country since the mid 80’s and have changed from an exotic novelty to a valued member of the livestock community. We have been raising alpacas on the farm between Black River Falls and Melrose for breeding stock and fiber for over eight years and have learned a lot as our herd has grown from three breeding age females and a cria to over forty animals. Many people have asked us about what’s involved in getting into the business; we’ve decided to have a session to help people answer those questions. Whether you are actively shopping for a starter herd or are thinking about a lifestyle change and would just like to learn more about the possibilities of getting into the alpaca business, this information is for you.

Alpacas produce luxurious fiber that is sought after for its warmth and comfort. No longer considered exotic, the alpaca is now recognized by the USDA as livestock and subject to the same benefits as other farming operations.

This day-long program will begin at 9 AM (with check-in beginning at 8:30 AM) at the Chamber of Commerce Building, 120 N. Water Street, Black River Falls, Wisconsin and end up at the farm, W11704 Norman Rd, Black River Falls for some hands-on time with the animals. The content for the day will include:
• an overview of the alpaca’s history,
• what’s happening in the alpaca industry,
• nutritional requirements for alpacas
• normal, routine care for alpacas,
• basic veterinary care and why it’s important to locate a competent vet,
• facilities and pasture management for alpacas,
• understanding alpaca fiber,
• business and tax aspects.

After the classroom time, participants will travel to the farm to see the alpacas, and have an opportunity for some hands-on activities. The cost for this program is $25/person or $40/couple sharing one set of materials; this includes the seminar as well as a light noon lunch, breaks and class materials.
